Nocturnal reflections on fate and the illusion of control
I have always lived inside the cathedral of certainties, erected my temple on the granite rock of willpower. I have always believed that the architecture of destiny was the exclusive work of our own calloused hands, that we — architects and bricklayers at once — were the ones weaving the golden thread of existence, choosing with deliberate mastery every crossroads, every serpentine path through the mountains of the possible. With the tenacity of a sculptor tearing shapes out of inert marble, I have always forged solutions where the impossible built its nest.
But today, on this day that carries the bitter taste of revelation, my certainties have disintegrated like towers of dry sand at the first breath of a mistral wind. I found myself a wreck without rudder or anchor, dragged by an ancestral flood, seized with primordial violence toward a river mouth wrapped in the fog of the unknown — a mouth that never asked for my consent, that never waited for my signature on the contract of existence.
Something cracked — a crystalline, terrible sound — in the delicate mechanism of my perpetual vigilance. An ancient, telluric force took possession of the strongholds of my convictions, conquering the towers of my directions with the silent determination of ivy strangling abandoned temples. It forced me to stare into the eyes of a truth that disarms the soul: perhaps we are nothing but tiny brass gears in a cosmic clock, infinitesimal cogs in a mechanism so vast it makes galaxies pale.
We trace ephemeral routes on the maps of illusion, we intoxicate ourselves with the mirage of being able to divert the course of events, but in the end — always in the end — it is the ancient law of physics that reigns sovereign from its quartz throne: nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything transforms according to a script already engraved in the constellations or carved into the bowels of the earth, in an alphabet we are not meant to decipher.
We are granted free will as a divine joke: sovereigns of crumbs, lords of minutiae, monarchs of the insignificant. We can choose the morning coffee mug, the color of the walls, the route home. But over the deep currents — those telluric tides that move the mountains of our lives, that reshape the continents of the soul — over those, we have no jurisdiction whatsoever. It is not up to us to trace the course of the rivers that carry us. It is not up to us to decide when the wind fills the sails or when it tears them apart.
“And so the tide and my mental chaos are no longer a coincidence, but the living proof that the world demands a metamorphosis from me.”
And it happened without warning, as revelations that change the face of the world always do. First, a song — a single, damned song — that I should not have listened to today, that slipped into the cracks of silence like water between stones. It became a luminous and painful portal to an extinct era, to a time history has declared dead but memory, stubborn custodian of relics, refuses to bury in its cemetery.
Then, the vertigo. A childish and cruel round dance that still echoes in my bones — ring around the rosie, the world falls down, the earth collapses, all fall down — while a storm of illogical ideas, a tornado of disordered thoughts besieged me from every side. A sea of senseless formulas swirled in my skull. I was exhausted. Exhausted beyond physical tiredness, beyond the fatigue of the soul. And in that absolute exhaustion, I did the most terrible and most liberating thing at once: I stopped swimming. I opened my arms and let the current take me.
If every desperate stroke, every titanic effort made so far has not brought me to the bright shore my eyes had chosen on the horizon, but instead I have been seized by invisible hands and violently dragged elsewhere — toward shores I did not know, toward beaches I had never seen on my maps — then perhaps it is precisely there, in that elsewhere wrapped in mystery and darkness, that my true destiny has always awaited me.
I do not know what lies beyond the bend of the river. Confusion is a thick, milky, impenetrable fog — far denser and more suffocating than I had ever predicted in my hours of proud clairvoyance.
And then, from cosmic nothingness, from the absence that precedes existence, he appeared. A “he” who often irritates me with his apparent immaturity, who to my critical eyes sometimes seems unripe, not yet matured under the sun of awareness, less wise than my arrogant presumption would demand. And yet, and yet… from the depth of his throat ancient words surged forth, words as old as the primordial sea, abyssal phrases heavy with the weight of geological eras, sentences that split the tumultuous tide in which I thrashed like a mad castaway.
Without knowing it — in a state of total oracular innocence — as if an invisible prompter, a demiurge hidden behind the curtain of reality, had whispered into his ear the secret script of my soul, he gave perfect, miraculous voice to what I felt but could not articulate.
It was the final confirmation, sealed with red wax on the parchment of destiny. It was not blind chance rolling the dice. It was not capricious luck spinning the wheel. It was Nature itself — the supreme architect, the cosmic weaver — decreeing with a thunderous voice that my path, as I knew it and caressed it in my fantasies of control, had come irrevocably to an end.
It commanded me to pull the oars from the battle against the waves, to hang my shoes forever on the rusty nail of surrender, to cease this quixotic struggle against currents that surpass me in power as the sea surpasses a drop. The tide and him, my mental chaos and his words, my confused ideas and my desperate need for time to reflect: all this is no longer a coincidence, no longer a suspicious clue, but the incontrovertible, mathematical proof that the world demands a radical metamorphosis from me.
It did not tell me what form I will take after the chrysalis. It did not whisper the final destination. But if months ago it forced me to descend into infernal spirals, to walk barefoot on the burning coals of the soul to arrive here, and if today it drags me away with the strength of a thousand wild horses, then this was its decision — fate’s, necessity’s, the universe’s. Not mine.
And so, in this theater of the absurd where every certainty crumbles, I will mock myself with the gentle cruelty of one who has finally understood. I will pretend — oh, how well I will pretend — to have become a master in the zen art of living day by day, of planning nothing, of letting events flow like water through fingers. I will play cat and mouse again, because this is the eternal game of existence, but with a new awareness, bitter as absinthe on the tongue: this time, for the first time in my proud predator’s life, I will play the mouse. I will be the prey. I will run through dark tunnels without knowing where they lead. I will tremble in the shadow of approaching claws.
Today I am nothing but a body of flesh and blood inside a tide that pushes fast, relentless, toward the unknown — perhaps toward the open sea where the horizon merges with the sky, perhaps toward a placid forgotten lake, or perhaps toward the apocalyptic crash against a dam of concrete and steel.
Sometimes, in my downward journey, I crash loudly against invisible submerged rocks. I feel no physical pain — no, that would be too simple — but I feel the flesh of the soul tearing, ripping. And yet, even as I stretch my desperate hands into the torrent, I cannot cling to any of these rocks. They slip from my grasp like water, like mercury, like dreams upon waking. I keep descending, sliding inexorably downward, toward that river mouth I do not know.
Life, perhaps, wants exactly this: my total surrender, my complete abandonment. And who am I — small, insignificant grain of sand among billions — to dare oppose the ocean? Who am I to plant my feet and shout “no” at the force that moves the stars and the tides?
Just to say. CJJ
Fingerò — oh, come fingerò bene!
Continuo a
Cosi. Per dire. CJJ
