P4Y – Step 74 – The No That Recognizes

Some days seem to hold more than one life.

Two moments, very different in nature and only a few hours apart, arriving one after the other without asking permission.

In the first, you set out thinking you are building a future, and you end up having to replan the present.

It is not a pleasant feeling, especially for someone used to holding things together, anticipating, organizing. And yet it happens. When it does, there is only one response that makes sense: stop. Cross your legs, let classical music fill the room, swallow the bitter pill. Then pick up a pen and some paper and start again from the beginning.

Disappointment? Thinking it over, no.

It would have happened anyway. Maybe not like this, maybe not while you were waiting for things to move toward a plan rather than toward a crack. But it would have happened. Sometimes life guides you gently, and sometimes it simply pushes. Just enough time to understand what is going on, and it is already time to move forward.

The second moment, on the other hand, was expected. You knew it would be heavy. It was worse.

A long, exhausting, sad conversation. The kind where, in the end, there is little left to say but a great deal left to understand.

Above all, about yourself.

Because the most uncomfortable question in these situations is not about others. It is about how long you chose to see beauty and goodness where they did not exist. How many differences you noticed and let slide. How many times you accepted that something was taken from you to be given to others, telling yourself that, in time, things would change.

They do not change. Almost never.

Those who truly care about something fight to keep it. Those who let it go, and then tell the story as if they had no choice, have already chosen. There is no need to assign blame: we are all made differently. But it is worth recognizing that the biggest mistake is not someone else’s. It is ours, when we keep making room for those who are not good for us, who remember us only when it suits them, who expect us to be present without ever having been present themselves.

Being left behind is part of the cycle of life. Staying where you are not seen is not.

After days like this, you feel the need for a place.

One of those places you can call home, cared for with precision and silence. A place that existed before us, exists with us, and will go on existing when we are gone. That thought alone is enough to put everything back in proportion: our time is a very small parenthesis, and it does not deserve the weight we often give it.

Almost two thousand years ago, Marcus Aurelius wrote that people look for retreats in the countryside, by the sea, in the mountains, yet there is no place quieter or freer from trouble than one’s own soul. Perhaps a beautiful place does not give us peace. It simply reminds us where we left it.

Do not deny the past. Do not force the present.

Eyes closed, fresh air, no thoughts to chase.

Until she showed up.

She came closer without hurry and stopped right there, in front, as if that place were hers as well. And it was. Eyes open, glances meeting for a moment.

And it became clear that peace does not depend on the nature of whoever brings it, but on their spirit. Human, animal, or anything else: what matters is the quiet inside. And if someone takes it away, perhaps it is time to take that someone out of your life. They will remain what they are. You, instead, can take back the joy of living.

Stop. Look back. Remember what you have done, and who you have been.

At that very moment, the phone rang.

An unknown number. Usually there is no answer. This time there was.

On the other end, someone never met before. They had read only a few pages, a career laid out line by line, and had understood enough to offer an important opportunity. Sincere compliments, a concrete proposal, no direct acquaintance.

The answer was no.

But that no was worth more than a thousand yeses. Because it was said to someone who had recognized who you are, who you have been, and who you are still trying to be. They had seen it from far away, through a few lines.

While those who were close, right in front, one meter away, had not noticed for years. And even when it came to losing, they had not thought of holding on.

Sometimes we are recognized by those who have never seen us, and lost by those who had us in front of them every day.

What else is there to say.

Safe travels, my friends. May the sun warm your skin and the breeze caress your hair.

Just saying. CJJ

P4Y – Step 73 – Il no che riconosce

Poi prendere penna e fogli e ricominciare dall’inizio.

Delusione? A pensarci bene, no.

Sarebbe accaduto comunque.

La risposta è stata no.

Buon viaggio, amiche mie.

Cosi. Per dire. CJJ
