P4Y – Step 72 – The Invisible Lines

I feel something strange when I think about the invisible lines that can run through a single afternoon. Just a few hours are enough to draw a clear boundary between before and after. And perhaps the hardest part is realizing that something we have spent a lifetime building can change its meaning in a single moment.

On the seventeenth day of the tenth month, at the seventeenth hour, I watched someone cross a boundary I had only imagined until then. It was like watching someone else’s happiness draw a line around my own world. Genuine joy, accompanied by the realization that something would never be quite the same again.

A life that will no longer depend on me alone. Decisions that will no longer be shared in the same way, other ears ready to listen, other people to turn to with thoughts, doubts, and hopes. And above all, the certainty that I will no longer be able to see someone as often as I need to.

It is difficult to explain how something can make us happy and deeply sad at the very same time. I would not change anything about what happened, yet I wish I could hold on to everything that will inevitably change.

When everything grows quiet, I find myself wondering: what was the purpose of being there all those years? Years, days, hours, silent anxieties, sacrifices, thoughts, and worries. Nights spent imagining problems that might never come, and others spent dealing with the ones that did. Decisions made with someone else’s life in mind before my own.

And then one afternoon, a few hours, a single gesture. Suddenly, everything seems to shift.

Perhaps the greatest paradox is dedicating so much of our existence to becoming someone else’s point of reference, only to discover that the best possible outcome is no longer being needed in quite the same way.

But who teaches us how to face that moment? Who explains how we are supposed to accept, in just a few hours, something that took a lifetime to build?

In those moments, with my stomach in knots, I felt as though I was not losing what I had spent so long protecting, but a part of myself. The part that, for years, had found its purpose in being needed by someone else.

Perhaps what we let go of never truly leaves us. It simply continues to exist in places, moments, and decisions where we no longer have the same place. And no matter how right that may be, it does not make letting go any less painful.

But beyond that boundary, I see more than someone else’s journey. I see my own, both the road I have traveled and the one still ahead. And I see a reckoning with everything and everyone around me.

There are moments that can change the value we place on people without them doing anything different from what they have always done. All it takes is noticing who is there, who is missing, and who unexpectedly shows up.

Some time ago, someone who caused me pain told me that, at a certain age, we finally earn the right to choose who we smile with and who we call a friend. Those words have never felt more true.

There are people you expect to be there, and they are. People who would rather tell a lie than honestly admit they were absent. People you desperately wanted beside you, but who never showed up. Others who turn an important moment in your life into an opportunity to deal with matters that concern only themselves. And then there are those you never expected, who simply know how to be there without needing to prove anything.

Not every absence carries the same weight. Some have an explanation. Others become the final confirmation of something we understood long ago but refused to accept.

Sometimes it does not take betrayal to bring a relationship to an end. Sometimes all it takes is realizing that, at the very moment you wanted to share something meaningful, there was no longer anyone on the other side.

And then even silence takes on meaning. Not because it needs to be interpreted, but because we finally stop trying to justify it.

That line drawn across the floor also represents the beginning of my own ending. Not today, not tomorrow, not in the coming months. But the ending of a part of my life into which I poured time, energy, and so much of myself. Something will continue, but it will never take quite the same shape again.

And perhaps this is what time ultimately asks of us: to learn to let go of what we love without ever stopping loving it, and to stop holding on to what no longer has a reason to stay.

While someone crossed that line to begin a new chapter of their life, I crossed another, less visible but just as final.

A step forward for the one moving on. A different kind of presence for the one who remains.

I feel no need to judge or ask for explanations. The time I have left is not endless, and I no longer want to spend it waiting for people who have already had too many chances to be there.

From this day forward, those who did not cross that line with me will no longer walk beside me.

Not out of anger, pride, or a desire to punish anyone. But because I have come to understand that sharing part of the journey does not mean we must travel together until the end.

Some boundaries are drawn by life without asking our permission. Others are the ones we finally decide never to erase again.

And perhaps that afternoon taught me exactly this: that someone else’s happiness can coincide with the loss of a part of ourselves, and that not everything we leave behind is meant to follow us.

Just saying. CJJ

P4Y Step 72 – Le linee invisibili

Anni, giorni, ore, ansie silenziose, rinunce, pensieri e preoccupazioni.

Cosi. Per dire. CJJ
