There’s no way around it: I can’t stand arrogant people.
I can put up with a lot of things.
Well, maybe not that many, but that’s another story.
What I really struggle with is smugness. Arrogance. That little touch of superiority from someone who talks to you with that “I know better, and you…” attitude.
It gets under my skin.
And the problem is, by now I know myself pretty well.
Should I stay calm? Probably.
Should I let it go? Definitely.
Should I count to ten before answering? Great idea.
Too bad I’ve usually already replied by the time I get to two.
Over the years, though, I’ve learned one thing: indifference often works much better than responding.
Not because the other person is right. Not because we should always let things slide. Simply because some people, some attitudes, and some arguments don’t deserve the time and energy we give them when we decide to react.
And that, at least for me, is the difficult part.
Because knowing something rationally is one thing. Actually doing it when someone pushes exactly the right button is another.
That’s when the reasonable little voice in my head says:
“Francesco, let it go.”
And immediately another one answers:
“No, wait a minute…”
The second one usually wins.
The funny thing is that I thought the opposite would happen as I got older.
I thought experience would make me more diplomatic, more patient, more capable of letting certain things roll off my back.
Maybe it has, a little.
But something else has happened at the same time: I have less and less desire to waste my time on certain attitudes.
So here I am.
Perfectly aware that sometimes it would be better to keep quiet.
Perfectly aware that answering back can even work against me.
Perfectly aware that indifference would often be the better response.
But apparently wisdom comes with age.
Patience, on the other hand, must have been delivered to the wrong address.
Just saying. CJJ
Posso sopportare tante cose.
Mi dà fastidio a pelle.
Dovrei stare calmo? Probabilmente sì.
Dovrei lasciar perdere? Sicuramente.
Dovrei contare fino a dieci prima di rispondere? Ottima idea.
“Francesco, lascia perdere.”
E subito dopo arriva quell’altra:
Cosi. Per dire. CJJ
