Retracing your steps is perhaps the hardest, most gut-wrenching test you can ever face. Acknowledging that what you hoped for, nurtured, and built day after day in your mind has turned out to be vastly different from reality requires an almost ruthless kind of courage. It means confronting a sudden emptiness, dealing with that profound disorientation that washes over you when you realize things won’t go the way you dreamed.
There is no set timeline for processing disappointment. There is no calendar, no metric, no short or long period that applies to everyone. There is only an unpredictable instant—a sudden, deep click inside your head that, without warning, tells you: enough.
When that click happens, the balance is shattered forever, and nothing is ever the same again. In that precise moment, the world around you shifts its skin: sometimes it feels as though a sudden gust of wind has swept away the clouds, finally allowing you to gaze at the clarity of the stars; other times, the fog thickens so heavily that you lose all sense of where you are, left feeling lost right at the center of your own life.
It is a bitter and heavy realization because it forces you to admit that the hopes you held onto were in vain, while a whisper of frustration tells you that all that time was wasted. But there is a greater truth hiding beneath that wound: you had the strength to try. You had the courage to put yourself on the line, to seek understanding, to walk toward a destination with everything you had. And when you reach that point, when you give everything, you may feel deep regret for how it ended, but you can never, ever blame yourself.
The truth is that not everything is within our control. Not everything that others allow to orbit in their existence has a direct link to our words, our desires, or our dedication. Yet, almost without noticing, we let other people’s choices and absences define our center. That is how, slowly, we go from being the sun to becoming a mere satellite.
We accept it out of love, out of blind trust, or out of the desperate hope that one day we might reclaim our place in their world. But when reality reveals itself for what it truly is, when you see that return will never happen, you are left with only two choices: resign yourself to accepting that you are no longer who you used to be—fading away little by little—or find the strength to cut the anchor and change your orbit.
Saying “enough” hurts. Admitting that you have to turn back, accepting that a person will never be who you wished they were or that a goal was never meant for you, requires a surrender that carries the quiet flavor of healing. We can keep persevering, we can stubbornly search for meaning where there is none and keep deluding ourselves; but staying trapped in the wrong place, persisting in error hoping for a different outcome, will only prolong the pain and pull us further away from who we are.
It hurts to turn around and take that first step back. But it’s the only way to stop losing yourself and remember that you deserve someone—or something—that never asks you to shrink just to fit in.
Just saying. CJJ
P4Y – Step 68 – Oltre l’illusione
Cosi. Per dire. CJJ
