P4Y – Step 69 – The Shape of Things

There are moments when life still manages to surprise us.

Not necessarily because something sudden happens, but because, all of a sudden, the way we look at what is in front of us changes.

It is like when, after days of cloudy skies, the clouds suddenly part. The landscape was already there, exactly where it had always been. We are the ones who can finally see it in a different light.

And sometimes, that light also reveals what we would rather not see.

There are paths we invest so much in that we eventually come to see them as a natural part of our lives. People, projects, places, habits. We imagine they will stay with us for a long time, perhaps forever.

Then something changes.

Not necessarily with a loud crash. Sometimes things wear away slowly, almost unnoticed, until one day we realize that what we once knew no longer exists in the same form.

Because even the most beautiful things can fall and break.

I have never fully embraced the idea that repairing something broken necessarily gives it a second life. The Japanese art of kintsugi turns fractures into something visible, almost something to be celebrated. It is a beautiful idea, but it has never entirely belonged to me.

Some things, once put back together, can certainly continue to exist, but they are no longer what they once were.

Perhaps the same is true of relationships between people.

I have always believed that each of us has our own shape. If you are born round, you remain round; if you are born square, you remain square. Of course, we can change, grow and adapt. But when staying inside something requires us to constantly reshape ourselves, sooner or later we risk no longer recognizing who we are.

And that is when the energy we invest in people and relationships matters.

Not everyone knows how to show it in the same way. Not everyone knows how to show it well. But there has to be something.

When you no longer feel part of a project or a shared journey, when you begin to feel marginal or even unnecessary, there comes a moment when you have to choose.

Some people lower their heads and endure.

Others raise their eyes a little higher and decide to face the unknown.

I do not believe one is necessarily right and the other wrong. In fact, when something comes to an end, everyone probably loses something: the person who walks away and the person who lets them go.

But one question remains more important to me than all the others: when someone truly matters to us, how much are we willing to do to keep them as part of our journey?

Because when we can no longer talk to each other, understand each other, or make someone feel that there is still a place for them, there is little point in wrapping ourselves in explanations or pretending that nothing has changed.

Sometimes we simply need the courage to call things by their name.

And let them end.

Let go of what no longer exists, or perhaps what stopped existing long ago in the way we once knew it.

Without erasing the past.

Because the past remains. The good parts, which deserve our gratitude, and the less beautiful ones, which still taught us something.

But then we have to take a step forward and look toward the horizon again.

Everyone has their own battles to fight, and every one of them matters. Some of those battles we might have fought together, perhaps even lost together.

But we cannot expect one person to play every role, hold all the pieces together and, at the same time, continue to be themselves.

Because at that point, what we risk losing is not simply a relationship, a project or a shared journey.

We risk losing ourselves.

And perhaps that would be the greatest loss of all.

So, forward.

Because behind the clouds, the sun never stopped shining. And sooner or later, a wind always comes that can sweep them away and give us back a clear sky, wide enough to see the horizon again.

Just to say. CJJ

Cosi. Per dire. CJJ
