He climbed for days. Every step a promise, every hold a hope. He looked at the peak and projected everything onto it: the dreams of when he was a child, the lightness of a perfect future, the answer to every struggle. Calloused hands, sleepless nights, burning muscles: it all made sense because up there, he thought, there would be something. Something different. Something more.
When he finally arrives, the wind welcomes him cold and silent. The world unfolds at his feet: valleys, rivers, forests. An immense beauty, real, almost cruel in its indifference.
But then he looks to the other side.
And there is nothing he hasn’t already seen.
Other peaks, other ravines, other inlets. The exact same pattern as before: climbs and descents, plains and obstacles. Only now there is a difference, subtle yet heavy as a boulder.
He no longer has the hope he once had.
He no longer has that blinding joy of wondering what lies “beyond.” Because now he knows: beyond there is more of the same. Other disappointments, other pains, other trials to overcome. And this, perhaps, is the least beautiful part of life: the moment when consciousness whispers to you that what you so desperately desired… is just what it is.
Not a betrayal. Just reality.
Yet – and this is perhaps the point – without that naive hope, he would never have started. Without the illusion of a different summit, he would never have put one foot in front of the other. Dreams are needed to get up. Stimuli are needed to keep going. And above all, what is needed is an obstinate determination: to seek other mountains to climb. Not because one has stopped hoping, but because one has understood that beauty does not lie in arriving.
It lies in searching, nonetheless.
Just to say. CJJ
Cosi. Per dire. CJJ
